Who Cares?

I blogged a lot back when blogging was a thing (back before social media). Back then, I wrote mostly about whatever was bouncing around in my head (which often clothed itself in a confessional tone). And, it wouldn’t be too far off to say it was my attempt to stay sane by exorcising my mental demons.

In this day and age, though, it feels like that could be dangerous (and maybe it was then, too, but I was young). There are a lot of people out there trying to capitalize on other people or to score some points at someone else’s expense. And, the web is just more populated with non-techies than it was then (with all that that brings).

The Perfect Social Network

I really miss del.icio.us. For me, it was the perfect social network. That’s really what I want from a social network: I want to be able bookmark things I find interesting, and read the links that other people (that I follow) find interesting. I don’t need any more than that. I don’t even need to know why they found the link interesting.

Over the many years, I’ve tried to use other social networks (with varying degrees of success/satisfaction). What’s really been consistent, though, is that I’ve tried to use them all as either a bookmarking service or a blog. When I was on Google+ (which, I thought, was a pretty good one, as far as social networks go), someone once said (in response to something I’d said) that using a social network and not wanting to actually engage with others was masturbatory. It made me laugh, but, okay. I see that perspective and I’m fine with it.

Okay… a new blog (once again)!

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about social media’s toxic nature. Even if one goes in not wanting to participate in it, there is a pull. It is the oxygen everyone there breathes, and it affects you. It’s one of the reasons I have to diligently police myself on Reddit (so as not to get caught up in that aggessively confrontational community, while still consuming the content that I do find useful), or watch what I consume on TikTok (as they say, “Never read the comments”). It’s also why I’m not on Twitter any more.

When someone is talking about how black people’s lives matter and someone else comes along and says, “blue lives matter,” they are, in my opinion, intentionally (or unintentionally) subverting the topic of discussion.

When someone is talking about how animals have rights and someone else comes along and says, “I’ll worry about animal rights after black people’s are respected,” they are, in my opinion, intentionally (or unintentionally) subverting the topic of discussion.
